KEKKELBEK

My one friend calls me KekkelBek. As a direct translation from Afrikaans, it means 'babble mouth', although it has as much to do with the fact that my nickname is 'bec' or 'beckle', short for Rebecca.

Also, bizarre ms paint today!

JIG

I wrote a poem/ children's book:

Let’s have a look
Let’s have a look
To see what we can find
In the deepest of deep
Wonders of our mind,

Where the elephants
Play on top of balloons
Perched above
A dessert of dunes.

I can see a grand castle
Made from 50 million
Jewels that sparkle
And lots of spikey plants
That are swaying
As if it is a dance!

A hippopotamus
Is waving to me
Balanced on the edge
of a big pink tree.
“Helloooo!” I say
But he goes his own way
While a turtle flies past
On a gigantic mouse!

I run to catch up
And we’re off
In a flash
Back to my world
Where a hat is a hat.

DREAMS

I want to work for Numen / For Use. I understand their work to be at an exciting midpoint between architecture and industrial design.

LIZZY

Lizzy wants to be a presenter. She'll make a great one. Click: here and watch her performance. Or click on this: video to watch.

I had a good weekend of eating. On Friday night, I went to a restaurant called 'Carne' and ate incredible carne  for Piet's birthday. It was an experience worth paying for. The meat is out of this world good. Then yesterday, I visited the farm for lunch and ended up spending the night. After an unbelievably delicious lunch (beef tartar, roasted pork shoulder - cooked perfectly, roasted sweet potatoes and pears and a peach pickle, WOW) and too much amazing Zandvliet wine, I went straight to bed.
Other exciting news? Mikes and I have free reign to build/ redo/renovate a portion of his house so that he can finally have a bedroom. The space we're going to work on is amazing. It'll be a triple volume room with a possible mezzanine level and enough space to store an elephant. Plus there's an existing bathroom in the corner that needs a huge clean (and a roof).

NOW I NEED TO WORK

BOOBS AND PUBES

I spent the whole day at the beach on Saturday. Cape Town is no longer the antarctic and the sun is finally giving off warmth again. The weather is at a point of perfection and I don't want it to go by without taking full advantage of the not-too-hot but not-too-cold beginning of spring. Beach again this weekend, to swim, collect more shells and read. Ayesha, let's do that as our 'plan'? Also, here's a boobs and pubes picture for you.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND SYNDROME

Research was successful. Two disorders discovered. Firstly, the rushing thoughts (as explained below - typing the previous post was a particularly strange sensation) is a dissociative disorder. Something about flushing out unwanted thoughts and repressing bad memories but then your brain chooses to take over and make you deal with whatever you need to deal with. Obviously those repressed memories of mine are long gone from my good ol' brain because I'm not feeling like I need to resolve much. Anyways, the other "disorder" I have is ALICE IN WONDERLAND SYNDROME. That may be the coolest sounding name for a disorder I've ever come across. It's when you have mild hallucinations (cool) and a warped sense of the size of your body, i.e. "abnormal amounts of electrical activity causing abnormal blood flow in the parts of the brain that process visual perception and texture". I either feel huge or tiny. Usually about once a month when I'm falling asleep.

These seem to be appropriately related to my [mostly] introverted personality which I spent 2 hours researching yesterday. I'll tell you about that another day, though. I find all this brain stuff very interesting. But this is: the best personality test if you're keen to find out what INTPSXYZ you are.

CRAZY

Every now and then I go a little crazy. My brain decides to go nuts and my thoughts start shouting and racing through my head. My physical movement feels distorted and, in contrast to the speeding brain activity, seems as if it is too slow. When I talk out loud my voice is stressed and tries to oppose the frantic sensation of my consciousness. It's bizarre. Phew, its slowly getting back to normal now... I'm going to google my 'symptoms' and see if anyone else in the world wide web has experienced something similar.

FEELING MARKS

This morning I went to Micklefield to teach the Grade 1 class how to express their feelings (with "feeling marks") on MS Paint for their computer lesson. Bianca is doing her teachers' prac there and asked me to help out. I could see some of the girls were "too cool" to enjoy scribbling on paint when drawing hearts and princesses was more up their alley but others were very cute and didn't want to stop at the end of the lesson. I'd expected them to be more willing to let loose but I think as soon as you reach proper school, the pressure from your peers and the expectations set from what's "good" and what's "bad" begins taking over your childhood innocence. Anyways, here are my favourites:

EYELY

This MS paint is a bit higgleydy-piggledy and busy in comparison to Lady Skollie's VagEYEnas #2 which inspired it. I don't know her, but she also lives in Cape Town. I came across her blog by accident and enjoyed her minolta photographs, fruity watercolours and genital cermaics.

BOSS

I'm finally getting along with my boss. She's giving me a great amount of responsibility and it's becoming a normal thing for me to go to meetings with clients / contractors without her. I'm still not convinced architecture is the bees knees though.

In other new, CONGRATULATIONS, AYESHA, MISS FULBRIGHT SCHOLARSHIP WINNER! Besides having a brain FULL of BRIGHTNESS, wit and intelligence you are one hell of a friend. I'm looking forward to saving up to come visit you while you are an American scholar.

THE MONSTER'S OESOPHAGUS

This is The Monster's Oesophagus showing the eyepi-valves. These singular celled organisms (not orgasms, a common malapropism) are used within the gullet as video cameras; recording, storing and connecting emotive reactions to food. In this case, The Monster is eating pink slime and the eyepi-valves are sensing a heightened surge of satisfaction.

TICKING WRIST

I've been feeling uninspired lately. Unmotivated to paint. I've tried getting one out a number of times but it's difficult breaking away from aesthetic habits that seem to control decisions while doodling. Unless I have an intention from the start, scribbling can become boring when repeating old lines, themes or methods. When this happens what I find helps is to "think until it starts to control". I force myself to trust my intuition and make unconsidered marks that oppose any visual goals. It is the only way I discover new ways of creating and expressing.

A lot has gone on since I last posted. I've booked my tickets to Ethiopia. And I've moved my office home and am consequentially much happier and procrastinating more!

TRE

Too much to look forward to!
Also, my dad is doing well.

Sunday 2 June 2013

WHERE TO START

1. It's Sunday and I have post work week sadness
2. When it hailed today in Cape Town I jumped out of my bed squeeling with excitement and ran to try catch it in a bucket. I'm obviously still 5.
3. I'm cooking dinner tonight for my housemates + amy + amy's new lover + monique
4. I'm going to make this: chicken in cashew nut sauce from my favourite Indian cookbook
5. My dad is going in for heart surgery on Tuesday so I'm taking the day off
6. My mom is going a bit dilly because she is stressing about it (understandably)
7. Michael is so blerry diligent and for the first time I am feeling sidelined, luckily his holidays start on Tuesday
8. MS Paint 1997 has a much better colour choice, but none of the cool brush options available in the current version. My parents are old school like that and have a windows XP operating system but choose to use the 1997 interface instead so that they didn't have to get used to anything new.
9. I need to go grocery shopping now.

MY NAME IS

This is page 1 of my postable portfolio.

Postable is always a great word to know.
So is lollapalooza. It means: an extraordinary or
unusual thing, person, or event; an exceptional
example or instance.

Thanks, Dictionary.com.

WISHY WASHY

I'm getting all this admin work from my boss who is getting it from this indecisive client. I've been investigating basin mixers and kitchen sinks today. I'm glad I don't have the same job as all the sales reps I've contacted... or do I?!

BLOMMSE

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. It could look cool PAINTED! My goal is to paint 5 large 'paints' this year then sell them to fund my travel plans. I've never painted before (didn't take art at school, decided on design instead) but my friend, Caelyn, who is an artist (see her beautiful work here: penniless mermaid) has been teaching me all I need to know (while watching Game of Thrones). Thank you, Caels.
